Rural and national road degradation across several West and Central African nations is causing significant economic and social disruptions. 

In Sierra Leone and Ghana, deteriorating road networks in districts such as Kono and Ho West have increased transport costs, hindered trade, and limited access to essential healthcare services. Residents have noted that uncompleted rehabilitation work and a lack of proper drainage exacerbate these issues, particularly during rainy seasons.

Similar infrastructure crises are reported in Guinea and the Central African Republic. In Guinea, motorcycle taxi drivers face impassable routes and mechanical breakdowns, while in the Central African Republic, the Bangui-Bangassou national road is in extreme disrepair. The latter has seen heavy vehicles trapped in mud for weeks, driving up market prices for goods. While local workers call for urgent rehabilitation, government sources in the Central African Republic indicate that projects for certain routes are planned.

Recent reports highlight further decay in Senegal and Guinea. In Senegal, the road connecting Wack Ngouna to Keur Yoro Khodia in the Nioro du Rip department has reached an advanced state of degradation. This route is considered economically significant for the ECOWAS region, serving as a corridor for traders from Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, and Niger. In Guinea, a 15-kilometer stretch between Kodiaran and Koromadou in the Mandiana prefecture is also facing severe deterioration. The rainy season has created potholes and mud pits, causing local gold miners and transporters to report significant delays and increased operational costs.
