Actor Rohit Roy sparked controversy in the Indian entertainment industry after describing television as a ‘dustbin medium’ during a YouTube interview. Roy argued that television content lacks the creativity of cinema, which he characterized as being ‘for posterity,’ and suggested that television actors lack the ‘carriage,’ grace, and dignity found in film stars.

His comments drew criticism from several industry professionals. Actress Devoleena Bhattacharjee questioned why Roy would demean the medium that launched his career, while actor Pankit Thakker advised against ‘spitting into the plate that gave you your first meal.’ Casting director Mukesh Chhabra defended the medium, citing the professionalism and discipline of television actors.

Actress Indira Krishnan labeled the comments ‘terrible,’ noting that television serves as a vital stage for actors and a launchpad for directors. Krishnan suggested such remarks might be a tactic used by ‘people who are forgotten’ to ‘stay relevant.’

Producer Sandiip Sikcand later addressed the remarks, stating that while he disagrees with Roy’s specific choice of words, he agrees with the underlying sentiment regarding the declining quality of television content. Sikcand attributed the decline in storytelling and character development to the existing industry system. He urged decision-makers in Hindi television to prioritize original storytelling over the heavy reliance on remaking regional shows to ensure the medium’s long-term stability.
