Archaeological excavations in Turkey have uncovered significant Roman and Late Antique remains at the ancient sites of Kibyra and Side.

In Kibyra, located in the Burdur province, researchers reconstructed a 2.14-meter-tall marble statue of Emperor Hadrian from fragments found at the city’s Monumental Entrance Gate. The statue depicts the emperor in military attire with lion and eagle reliefs. Fragments of a statue believed to be Empress Sabina were also recovered at the site.

In the ancient city of Side, located in Antalya’s Manavgat district, excavations under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s ‘Heritage for the Future Project’ have revealed a 390-meter-long urban axis known as ‘b Street’. Findings show the area’s architectural evolution from the 2nd-century Roman period to the 5th-century Late Antique era, when the street was incorporated into the Bishop’s Palace complex. A major discovery at this site is the Herakles Gate, which features reliefs of the ‘Twelve Labors of Heracles’ and various deities, including Athena, Zeus, Artemis, Hygeia, and Tykhe. While the gate was built during the Late Antique period, the reliefs are believed to be early 3rd-century spolia.

Additionally, in Antalya’s Kaleiçi district, the 1,900-year-old Hadrian’s Gate, a white marble triumphal arch built in 130 AD to honor Emperor Hadrian’s visit, has undergone new lighting work by the Antalya Governor’s Office.
