Archaeological excavations in Wales have uncovered significant evidence of Roman occupation in two distinct regions.

In Pembrokeshire, near Frenni Fawr, researchers led by Dr. Mark Merrony of the University of Oxford identified a Roman military camp, or castellum. Using satellite imagery and geophysical surveys, the team located rectangular structures, clay floor bases, coins, ceramic fragments, a gaming piece, and a spindle weight. The site is believed to be linked to the 4th-century reign of Emperor Magnus Maximus, potentially providing historical evidence for the medieval Welsh legend ‘The Dream of Macsen Wledig’ from the Mabinogion collection.

In North Wales, excavations at the Rossett Roman villa near Wrexham, conducted by the University of Chester and DigVentures, revealed evidence of human activity that predates the villa’s construction. A complete grinding stone found in an earlier archaeological layer suggests the site was occupied before the stone residence was established. The villa itself shows signs of multiple developmental phases, with structures being modified and adapted over time.
