Archaeologists have discovered a 1,700-year-old pyramid-shaped mudbrick and limestone tomb in Egypt’s Dakhla Oasis, dating to the late third or early fourth century AD during the Roman period. The structure, located near ancient Mothi at the Bir Al-Shaghala site, was built for a high-status couple and features two burial chambers, a vaulted hall, and a sandstone entrance decorated with hieroglyphic funerary texts, cobras, and a winged sun disk.

A significant find within the tomb is a rectangular stone funerary stele containing a 19-line elegy written in Ancient Greek using red ink. The poem commemorates an individual named Psychtis, or Visixthos, who is described as a “counselor in life” and may have served as a judge. The text includes a lament from his son, Sarapion, who addresses him with the words, “Listen, father!”, while requesting he accept funerary offerings.

The inscription’s grammar shows similarities to Homeric epics, indicating a highly educated author. The discovery highlights a cultural fusion of Egyptian religious traditions and Greek literary expression under Roman rule. Additionally, a bronze coin featuring Emperor Constantine the Great was recovered, suggesting the tomb may have been reused in a later period.
