Romania and Ukraine have initiated a partnership to manufacture drones through the European SAFE (Security Action for Europe) financing instrument. The program, which has a total budget of 200 million euros, involves five Romanian companies—Autonomous Flight Technologies (AFT), OVES Enterprise, Orbotix Industries, BraveX, and Qognifly—collaborating with Ukrainian manufacturers Greentech, General Cherry, and Edrone.

This initiative aims to address the need for domestic interceptor drones, particularly as Romania faces airspace incursions by Russian Shahed-type drones. The project is viewed as a more financially sustainable alternative to using traditional fighter jets for interceptions. 

Following the initial proposal, Romanian President Nicușor Dan held discussions with President Zelenskyy to accelerate the joint drone production project under the SAFE Program.
