Romanian handball teams have seen success in both international tournaments and club competitions. The Romanian women’s national team secured a bronze medal at the EHF Euro Cup in Bucharest after defeating Hungary 33-30. This victory followed a difficult opening loss to Denmark, where analysts cited issues with defensive consistency and attacking efficiency. Under coach Ovidiu Mihăilă, the team overcame underdog status to secure third place, though former player Vasile Stângă noted that success heavily relies on goalkeeper form and requires improved tactical preparation ahead of EURO 2026.

In preparation for the 2026 Women’s European Handball Championship, the Romanian women’s team secured a series victory against Croatia. In the first friendly held in Koprivnica, Romania won 34-32, with Mihaela Andreea Mihai and Cristina Laslo each scoring six goals. Romania followed this with a 28-25 victory in Prelog, completing a successful preparation series for coach Mihăilă. The upcoming championship will be co-hosted by Romania, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, and Turkey, with Romania scheduled to compete in Group B at the BT Arena in Cluj-Napoca.

At the club level, Romanian teams have competed in the Champions League. In the women’s competition, Gloria Bistrița defeated Denmark’s Odense Handbold 29-27 at the TeraPlast Arena. Despite Odense leading 22-20 in the second half, Gloria Bistrița secured the win with contributions from Johanna Reichert, who scored seven goals, and Lorena Gabriela Ostase, who scored five.
