Commemorations are being organized in Rome to mark the 83rd anniversary of the October 16, 1943, Nazi raid on the city’s Jewish Ghetto. The historical event involved the arrest of over 1,000 people, most of whom were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where only 16 survived.

The anniversary highlights a period of escalating persecution under Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime, which began with the 1938 Manifesto of Race and subsequent decrees that stripped Jewish citizens of their rights, property, and access to public education.

To preserve historical memory and combat rising antisemitism, the Fondazione Museo della Shoah and the Jewish Community of Rome have announced various cultural initiatives. These programs include theatrical performances, archival exhibitions, and educational activities designed to engage younger generations through cinema, podcasts, and research.
