Authorities in Rome have established a ‘red zone’ (zona rossa) around the Colosseum, the Imperial Fora, and surrounding historic landmarks to combat rising crime. The measure, effective from late August through December 24, 2026, aims to address an increase in thefts, robberies, drug trafficking, and public disorder.

Rome's Prefect, Lamberto Giannini, cited a surge in predatory crime and violent incidents, including a July event where a group of approximately 50 youths reportedly attacked police officers with fireworks. The security zone encompasses the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Colle Oppio, Via dei Fori Imperiali, Piazza Venezia, and Capitoline Hill. While tourists may still visit these sites, the ordinance implements enhanced security controls, increased police presence, and rapid response capabilities. Law enforcement is authorized to monitor and potentially remove individuals deemed dangerous or those with specific criminal records.

In addition to the Colosseum area, heightened security and monitoring have been implemented near major landmarks and transport hubs, including Termini Station, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Following the implementation of the ordinance, the Carabinieri have issued the first eight orders of removal from the protected area. Recent enforcement actions include the arrest of two individuals in Largo Gaetana Agnesi for stealing a German tourist’s backpack, and the identification of six others participating in the ‘three bells game,’ a form of fraudulent gambling.

While government officials have welcomed the measures to restore public order, concerns have been raised regarding potential racial profiling and abuses of authority during increased police and military interventions.
