Rome is implementing several technological initiatives to modernize its urban mobility and infrastructure management.

In August 2026, the city approved a €49.9 million tender for a five-year contract to manage and maintain its traffic light network. This project aims to upgrade over 1,500 systems by integrating artificial intelligence for monitoring and centralizing control for approximately 100 road axes to improve traffic flow and safety.

Regarding traffic restrictions, the city is launching a trial phase for the Appia Antica Territorial Limited Traffic Zone (ZTLT) starting September 19, 2026. This automated system will use electronic checkpoints at three specific entrances: Via Appia Antica from Via delle Mura Latine, the intersection of Via Appia Antica and Via Appia Pignatelli, and the access to Via Ardeatina from Via delle Sette Chiese. Once fully operational, the zone will be active year-round (excluding August) on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:00 to 19:00 to reduce transit traffic through the UNESCO-recognized archaeological park.

Furthermore, new regulations for disability permits (CUDE) have taken effect. While permit holders may associate two license plates with their permit, only one vehicle is authorized to enter Rome’s historic center ZTL. This change is expected to remove approximately 37,770 vehicles from the center. Mobility Assessor Eugenio Patanè stated that the measure does not infringe on mobility rights, as holders can choose between their two authorized vehicles via a digital portal.
