Lyon maintains a diverse landscape of athletic and cultural traditions. Local running clubs, such as AAA Lyon Route and Courir à Lyon Route et trail, provide various options for road and trail running, supported by municipal subsidies and community initiatives to combat sedentary lifestyles.

In addition to these clubs, the region hosts significant annual events. The Fête des Lumières, a tradition dating back to 1852, features large-scale light art installations throughout the city. This coincides with the SaintéLyon, one of France’s oldest nature running competitions, which attracts approximately 20,000 participants for various race distances.
