A crisis emerged in late August 2026 following reports of numerous dog deaths across Russia, including the Yaroslavl region, Moscow, and Kaliningrad. Owners and veterinarians linked the illnesses to Multikan-8, a combined vaccine produced by Vetbiokhim. Reported symptoms included high fever, vomiting, and bleeding.

By mid-September, the Russian veterinary regulator Rosselkhoznadzor confirmed a link between the vaccine and the pet deaths, discovering live Aujeszky’s disease virus in samples. The regulator ordered the destruction of Batch 20, which contained 60,000 doses.

While the manufacturer initially suggested potential sabotage, investigators identified serious production violations. The State Duma reported approximately 300 complaints regarding pet deaths. Vetbiokhim faces potential license revocation and has reportedly entered into compensation agreements with affected owners, offering between 200,000 and 300,000 rubles per case, contingent upon signing non-disclosure agreements.
