# Rwanda Formula 1 Grand Prix development > Live situation record from CLSTR: https://clstr.news/situations/rwanda-formula-1-grand-prix-development > Updated: 2026-10-08T14:00:17.000Z. Sources: 27. Developments: 2. Reports indicate that Rwanda has reached an agreement to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, potentially starting as early as 2030. This event would mark the return of the sport to the African continent for the first time since 1993. To facilitate the race, Rwanda plans to build a permanent circuit near Bugesera International Airport, approximately 40 kilometers from Kigali. The project is a priority for President Paul Kagame and may involve design work by WurzDesign. While formal confirmation from the Rwandan government and the FIA is expected, reports suggest that Qatar is supporting the initiative. Sources close to the Rwandan government and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) indicate the bid has been approved, with an official announcement expected in Kigali next week. The move aligns with long-standing advocacy for an African race by Lewis Hamilton. While some view the hosting of major sporting events—including the cycling world championships and football club sponsorships—as a way to enhance Rwanda’s international image and attract investment, critics have characterized such efforts as “sports-washing” to divert attention from human rights concerns and political restrictions. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-08: Rwanda reaches agreement to host Formula 1 Grand Prix Rwanda has reportedly secured an agreement to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix starting around 2030, marking the sport's return to Africa for the first time since 1993. 12 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/rwanda-to-host-formula-1-grand-prix ### 2026-10-06: Rwanda to host Formula 1 Grand Prix starting in 2030 Rwanda has reportedly reached an agreement to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix starting in 2030, marking the sport's return to Africa for the first time since 1993. 16 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/rwanda-to-host-formula-1-grand-prix-starting-in-2030 --- Cite as: Rwanda Formula 1 Grand Prix development.
