Initial reports indicated that Shimizu and three other teenagers were traveling on motorcycles when they were pursued by a dark-colored passenger vehicle. Witnesses suggested that individuals in the car caught up to the group and assaulted Shimizu and another male. Shimizu was confirmed dead on August 24 due to a brain contusion caused by blunt force trauma to the head. A 14-year-old junior high school student traveling with the victim also sustained facial injuries during the assault.
