Construction at the Sagrada Família in Barcelona has reached a major milestone with the completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ. This achievement brings the basilica to a height of 172.5 metres, making it the world’s tallest church and surpassing Germany’s Ulm Minster.

The project has integrated Antoni Gaudí’s 19th-century geometric designs with modern engineering, utilizing modular building systems, steel reinforcement, and 24 tonnes of structural adhesive. This progress coincides with the centenary of Gaudí’s death in 1926.

While the basilica continues to evolve as a religious narrative expressed through stone and light, a walkable viewing platform is expected to open to visitors in 2027. 

Previously, the construction board indicated that the basilica could be finished within a decade, though this timeline depended on resolving urban planning issues regarding the Glory Facade. To fulfill Gaudí’s original design, which features a monumental staircase and a new entrance on Mallorca Street, certain existing buildings must be demolished. General director Xavier Martínez suggested a “minimum solution” involving the demolition of a single building, with plans to relocate affected residents. While negotiations with the Barcelona City Council were reportedly “very advanced,” the final authority lies with the local government. Local residents and affected associations have expressed significant concern regarding the impact on their homes, describing the situation as “Kafkaesque.”
