In his reflections, the Archbishop addressed the patron saint of the city, noting that Salerno has long guarded the saint’s remains within its Cathedral. Bellandi emphasized that the religious festivities should transcend mere tradition, serving instead as a transformative encounter. He referenced the Gospel account of Matthew’s calling, highlighting how Jesus saw potential in the tax collector and offered him a new future. As the feast day on September 21 approaches, religious tradition honors Matthew as an apostle and evangelist. Originally known as Levi, his transition from a tax collector in Capernaum to a disciple serves as a central theme in the Gospels, emphasizing divine mercy. This theme is often highlighted by the Gospel passage where Jesus states, “I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” While historical accounts vary regarding his martyrdom or death, he is credited with authoring the first Gospel, which was likely composed for a Jewish-Christian audience to demonstrate that Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. Traditions suggest he preached in Judea and potentially Ethiopia. Due to his former profession, Saint Matthew is recognized as the patron saint of accountants, bankers, customs agents, and tax collectors. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-20: Saint Matthew: Feast day of the apostle and evangelist September 21 is the feast day of Saint Matthew, the apostle and evangelist.
