Sources: 5. Developments: 2. The Salzburg provincial government is undergoing leadership transitions following the decision by Stefan Schnöll to leave politics for the private sector. Schnöll, who managed the tourism portfolio, emphasized that regional tourism strategy should prioritize quality and value creation to ensure harmony with local residents. Wolfgang Mayer, formerly the ÖVP parliamentary group leader, has been appointed to succeed Schnöll as Deputy Governor. Mayer is expected to be formally elected by the state parliament on November 4 and will assume responsibility for the finance, transport, and health portfolios. This appointment triggers a broader reshuffle: Daniela Gutschi will transition to overseeing arts, culture, and museums, while Governor Karoline Edtstadler will personally take charge of the tourism sector. Hans Scharfetter is set to succeed Mayer as the ÖVP parliamentary group leader. Concurrently, tensions have emerged regarding local tourism board elections in Hallein. Issues include conflicts over access to voter registries and the deployment of security personnel. While the Salzburg public prosecutor’s office previously declined to investigate alleged misuse of funds for election campaigning due to lack of evidence, the state audit office is scheduled to review the tourism board’s finances in 2027. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-06: Salzburg tourism leadership changes and local election tensions Salzburg tourism official Stefan Schnöll announces his political departure, while Hallein faces a tense tourism board election amid financial scrutiny and administrative conflicts. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/salzburg-tourism-leadership-changes-and-local-election-tensions ### 2026-09-19: Wolfgang Mayer appointed Deputy Governor of Salzburg Wolfgang Mayer will succeed Stefan Schnöll as Deputy Governor of Salzburg, taking over the finance, transport, and health portfolios in a regional government reshuffle. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/wolfgang-mayer-appointed-deputy-governor-of-salzburg --- Cite as: Salzburg provincial government leadership changes.
