Local stakeholders and the Union of Remote Friends & Diaspora of Samothrace, ‘I AXIEROS’, are seeking government intervention to resolve a long-standing land ownership dispute on the island of Samothrace. 

The dispute, which has been pending since 2021, involves requests to classify the island as a non-cadastral area under specific legal exceptions. Despite submissions from current Mayor Athanasios Vitsas to the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Digital Governance, the issue remains unresolved. Local residents and officials argue that state claims on land create obstacles for property owners and impede regional development. 

Stakeholders are attempting to secure a meeting with the Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, during his visit to Alexandroupoli on September 3, 2026, to demand a legislative solution.
