A major fire at the Museum of Folk Architecture in Sanok, Poland, destroyed the 17th-century St. Nicholas Church. The blaze broke out around 1:00 AM on the night of August 15–16, 2026.

Approximately 140 firefighters from 27 units responded to the emergency. While crews managed to protect several nearby wooden structures and prevent the fire from reaching a warehouse, the church was completely consumed. Two other historic buildings, including a 19th-century cottage and a barn, also sustained damage. One firefighter suffered a hand burn during the operation.

The destruction resulted in the loss of significant cultural artifacts, including historic organs, altars, liturgical equipment, paintings, and sculptures. Museum director Marcin Krowiak described the event as an “incalculable loss to the region’s cultural heritage,” noting that only a wooden cross located near the entrance survived. The museum has closed to visitors, and authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
