The court found the men exploited a Bangladeshi woman who had arrived in Canada on a visitor visa in August 2022. According to court proceedings, Haider recruited the victim through a job posting for the Empire Diner in Gull Lake by promising a work permit. The victim was subsequently isolated and forced to work twelve-hour shifts six days a week for little or no pay. The exploitation continued after she was moved to Tisdale, where demands were made for large sums of money in exchange for a work permit. Judge Miguel Martinez also convicted Masum of three counts of sexual assault. Crown prosecutor Leslie Dunning noted that the verdict sets a precedent as the first human-trafficking conviction in Saskatchewan, potentially serving to deter future abuses of newcomers and temporary foreign workers.
