The Government of Saskatchewan has initiated a long-term energy strategy titled ‘Delivering Energy Security Through Nuclear Power’. The plan aims to establish nuclear energy as a core component of the provincial energy mix, targeting at least 2,600 megawatts (MW) of production by 2050 to support industrial and population growth.

Following the initial strategy, the province proposed a specific large-scale project to build two nuclear reactors in northwest Saskatchewan to achieve 2,000 MW of capacity. This proposal has prompted discussions regarding economic feasibility, with estimates suggesting the project could cost between $30 billion and $50 billion. AtkinsRéalis is among the competitors for the project, offering CANDU reactor designs including the 950-MW MONARK and the 750-MW EC6.

As the strategy advances, Cameco has expressed support for the province’s goal of 2,600 MW of capacity by 2050. Cameco, which acts as a uranium producer and a stakeholder in reactor technology provider Westinghouse, is considering expanding its industrial value chain by establishing uranium enrichment capabilities within Canada. The company noted that such an expansion would depend on policy decisions regarding the deployment of AP1000 reactor fleets in Canada and Ontario.

On an international scale, Cameco is monitoring a non-binding agreement between the United States and the Republic of Korea. This deal potentially involves up to $120 billion in Korean investment to fund the construction of up to eight reactors in the U.S., including Westinghouse AP1000 units and Korean APR1400 reactors.
