Initially, the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification registered 26 national parks, covering more than 5,115 square kilometers, into the National Register of Protected Areas. This action aimed to align national data with international standards and improve environmental planning. Following this, the Kingdom launched the National Greening Season, a campaign to expand vegetation cover using native plant species and encourage environmental volunteerism. Additionally, a solar power installation near the Red Sea coastline in the Prince bin Salman Nature Reserve is being used to support the conservation of the Arabian sand gazelle. This project, described as ‘ReWildingVoltaics’, utilizes wildlife-proof fencing to protect the species with the goal of increasing the population from 38 to over 500 animals. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-07: Saudi Arabia launches National Greening Season and solar-based wildlife conservation Saudi Arabia has launched a National Greening Season to combat desertification and is utilizing solar power installations to provide breeding habitats for threatened Arabian sand gazelles. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/saudi-arabia-launches-national-greening-season-and-solar-based-wildlife-conservation ### 2026-09-09: Saudi Arabia registers 26 national parks in protected areas registry Saudi Arabia has registered 26 national parks, totaling over 5,115 square kilometers, in the National Register of Protected Areas to support the Saudi Green Initiative and international conservation standards. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/saudi-arabia-registers-26-national-parks-in-protected-areas-registry --- Cite as: Saudi Arabia environmental conservation initiatives.
