The Scarlets rugby team has faced significant challenges both on and off the field. During a pre-season match at Church Bank, the team suffered a heavy 80-14 defeat against the Dragons, after conceding 61 unanswered points in the second half. Director of rugby Nigel Davies characterized the performance as a “humbling experience” for the young squad.

In the opening Welsh regional derby of the BKT United Rugby Championship, the Scarlets lost 21–15 to Cardiff Rugby. This match occurred amidst ongoing tension regarding Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) restructuring plans. Under Dave Reddin, the WRU intends to reduce the number of regional teams from four to three. While Cardiff and the Dragons are reportedly safe, the Scarlets and Ospreys are competing for the final remaining slot. Nigel Davies has criticized the restructuring process for its lack of stability.

As the United Rugby Championship continues, the Scarlets are scheduled to face the Dragons at Rodney Parade. Both sides are seeking to improve their recent form; the Dragons have recorded consecutive draws in their last two URC matches, while the Scarlets continue to struggle to secure wins in their recent Championship and URC outings.
