Historian and biblical archaeology specialist Rodrigo Silva and astronomer Sérgio Sacani are scheduled to participate in a debate titled ‘Universo, fé e os grandes segredos da existência’ (Universe, faith, and the great secrets of existence). The event is part of the Metrópoles Talks (also associated with the JETSS lecture series) and will take place on October 29 at the Museu Nacional da República in Brasília.

The discussion aims to explore the intersections of astronomy, science, archaeology, history, and the Bible, specifically addressing the existence of God and the limits of human knowledge. Sacani, a science communicator, will discuss the origin of the universe and the possibility of life beyond Earth, while Silva will provide perspectives on the historical and archaeological investigations of biblical narratives.

In preliminary discussions regarding the upcoming event, the participants have highlighted contrasting viewpoints. Silva argued that the complexity of variables required for life on Earth makes it ‘unlikely to be a mere coincidence.’ Conversely, Sacani suggested from a scientific perspective that the universe lacks inherent purpose and that human existence may be a result of chance. The debate is also expected to address the nature of intelligent life and the interpretation of spiritual beings through a scientific lens.
