Medical experts have raised concerns regarding the efficacy of probiotic supplements, arguing that scientific evidence for their widespread benefits is weaker than their popularity suggests.

Epidemiologist Gideon Meyerowitz-Katz noted that introducing a single bacterial strain to the complex human gut is an oversimplification, comparing the practice to “dropping 10,000 trees into the Amazon rainforest and expecting it to solve all ecological problems.” He pointed to low-quality clinical trials and systematic reviews that showed no significant benefit for preventing the common cold or infectious diarrhea.

Dr. Trisha Pasricha added that supplements may not successfully recolonize the microbiome and might simply pass through the body. Experts suggest that consuming fermented foods, such as kimchi or yogurt, may be a more effective way to support gut health.
