Sources: 2. Developments: 2. Efforts to reform lifeline air services for Scotland’s remote island communities have intensified through political advocacy and proposed summits. In late September, an aviation summit was scheduled to address the stability and dependability of connections for the Highlands and Islands. MSPs Hannah Mary Goodlad and Kristopher Leask had previously advocated for a fundamental review, with Goodlad stating that “continuing with the status quo is no longer an option” due to issues with reliability and affordability. Following these developments, the Scottish National Party (SNP) called for a “wholesale review” of island air connections after passing a motion at its conference in Aberdeen. The party is seeking reforms to the Air Discount Scheme (ADS), arguing that current discounts do not sufficiently offset high base fares. Additionally, proponents are urging the Scottish government to seek devolved powers to manage these transport connections more effectively to meet the specific needs of local residents. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-17: SNP demands wholesale review of island lifeline flights The SNP is demanding a wholesale review of lifeline air connections and reforms to the Air Discount Scheme to improve affordability for Scotland's remote island communities. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/snp-demands-wholesale-review-of-island-lifeline-flights ### 2026-09-22: Highlands and Islands aviation summit to address lifeline air services The Highlands and Islands aviation summit will take place on 29 September to discuss improving unreliable and unaffordable lifeline air services for island communities. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/highlands-and-islands-aviation-summit-to-address-lifeline-air-services --- Cite as: Scottish island lifeline aviation service reviews.
