Alexandru Bociu, president of Romania’s National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA), has come under scrutiny regarding his leadership and use of public funds.

Initial reports focused on Bociu’s political ties to PNL figure Valeriu Iftime and administrative challenges involving livestock vaccine procurement. While Bociu facilitated the receipt of 1.3 million free vaccine doses from the European Commission, Agriculture Minister Barna Tanczos noted these are restricted to Tulcea and Constanța counties, leaving the rest of the country to fund additional doses.

Subsequent reports highlighted significant travel expenditures by Bociu. Data indicates he spent approximately €40,000 on 60 domestic and international trips during 2025 and 2026, resulting in 192 days away from the institution. These findings follow previous investigations by the Romanian Court of Accounts into financial irregularities at the agency.
