Following the announcement that Dan Wilson would not return for the 2027 season, the Seattle Mariners initiated an offseason search for a new manager. The departure was accompanied by the exit of four additional coaches. Mariners executive Jerry Dipoto stated the organization seeks a candidate from outside the team to provide “fresh thought” and challenge the existing operation after a season marked by offensive and defensive struggles.

As the search progressed, the focus shifted toward candidates with varying levels of experience. Early discussions included names such as Torey Lovullo, Stephen Vogt, and Brad Ausmus. Later reports indicated that the team was considering candidates including Jason Kanzler, Joe Espada, and Rocco Baldelli. Dipoto suggested a potential strategic shift toward hiring managers with prior major league leadership experience, moving away from the recent practice of hiring managers without previous major league managerial roles.
