Developments: 2. Syria is experiencing heightened instability characterized by sectarian tensions and challenges to government authority. In the Suwayda province, armed groups affiliated with Druze leader Hikmat al-Hijri have disrupted public services and challenged state control. Specifically, these groups blocked the main Damascus-Suwayda highway at the Um ez-Zeytun checkpoint, an action that has stranded citizens and commercial vehicles while causing local fuel prices to surge by over 100%. While the groups claim the blockade is a protest to demand information regarding missing and detained individuals, the Syrian government has accused them of holding civilians against their will. Beyond Suwayda, sectarian hostilities persist nationwide. Pro-government demonstrators have vandalized Kurdish symbols in the Hasakeh and Raqqa regions, and Christian communities in Al-Suqaylabiyah have been targeted by mob attacks. Analysts suggest that Kurdish, Druze, and Alawite communities remain fearful of systemic discrimination within the current political order. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-24: Suwayda groups block Damascus-Suwayda highway in Syria Armed groups linked to Druze leader Hikmat al-Hajri have blocked the Damascus-Suwayda highway, stranding hundreds and causing fuel prices to spike by over 100% in southern Syria. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/suwayda-groups-block-damascus-suwayda-highway-in-syria ### 2026-10-24: Syria faces instability amid sectarian tensions and Suwayda unrest Syria faces growing instability as armed groups in Suwayda challenge government authority and sectarian violence targets Kurdish, Christian, and Druze minority communities. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/syria-faces-instability-amid-sectarian-tensions-and-suwayda-unrest --- Cite as: Sectarian tensions and unrest in Syria.
