Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch met with Zapotec textile designer Elvis Guerra at Palacio Nacional following an armed attack on Guerra’s residence in Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca, on September 18.

Guerra reported that the attack followed previous threats and alleged extortion attempts. The Oaxaca State Attorney General's Office is investigating extortion as a primary motive and has identified suspects. During the meeting, Guerra stated that her plea for justice addresses the “broader security crisis affecting the entire community of Juchitán.”

President Sheinbaum confirmed that Guerra is under protection and pledged there would be “no impunity,” noting that security measures must address systemic issues in the municipality. The meeting coincided with reports that Juchitán Mayor Miguel Sánchez Altamirano was detained as part of an investigation into alleged extortion and crimes against state security.
