The province of Catamarca, Argentina, is experiencing ongoing seismic activity and historical commemoration. On September 7, the province observed the ‘Día del Milagro’ (Day of the Miracle), a provincial holiday marking the 22nd anniversary of a 6.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in 2004. While that event caused significant structural damage to over 1,300 homes, no fatalities were recorded.

More recently, the region has seen increased seismic activity, with 19 events recorded so far this year. On September 9, 2026, two earthquakes occurred: a magnitude 2.6 tremor at a depth of 127 kilometers and a magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Antofagasta de la Sierra at a depth of 6 kilometers.

In response to these events, geologist Lorenzo Parra has called for a revision of seismic risk maps provided by the National Institute for Seismic Prevention (INPRES), suggesting that current zonification may not adequately account for local complexities in areas such as the Sierra de Ambato.
