Seismic activity in the Granada region of Spain has escalated into an intense sequence known as the ‘Alhendín seismic series’. Since mid-August, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) has recorded over 1,400 tremors, with more than 100 felt by the public.

Significant activity included two magnitude 4.8 earthquakes on August 15 in Alhendín and August 18 in Gójar. These shallow tremors were felt across more than 500 locations, including Málaga, Córdoba, Jaén, Almería, Murcia, and Madrid, resulting in material damage, evacuations, and minor injuries.

While a magnitude 2.5 earthquake on August 28 drew historical comparisons to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and coincided with the 90th anniversary of the disappearance of poet Federico García Lorca, experts focus on the geological reality of the region. Geologist Raúl Pérez López from the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (IGME-CSIC) noted that earthquakes with a magnitude over 4 in southern and southeastern Spain are not unusual due to local fault lines. Although the region has the potential for magnitude 5 or 6 events, experts emphasize that statistical averages cannot be used to predict exactly when the next significant earthquake will occur.
