Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini has defended the closure of the Seminario tunnel on the SS63 highway in the Reggio Emilia province. Despite requests from local administrations and the Union of Apennine Municipalities to delay construction to protect the summer tourist season, Salvini stated that the 15 million euro fire safety upgrades and restoration works are “non-negotiable”.

The closure, which commenced on August 7, is expected to continue until April 30, 2027, to meet safety regulations mandated by a June 2025 ministerial decree. The road authority, Anas, maintains that the intervention is essential for infrastructure safety.
