In late June 2026 Senegal concluded Operation “Salémata 2026,” deploying over 350 troops and about 40 vehicles along the Senegal‑Guinea frontier for joint security and civil‑military projects. In mid‑July Senegalese forces entered the historic Bullock Military Camp in The Gambia, demolishing roughly 200 metres of its perimeter fence and, on 19 July, ordered Gambian farmers in Jimbala Kerr Musa to abandon their fields, claiming the land belonged to Senegal. The clash left one Senegalese soldier injured and another missing, prompting diplomatic condemnation from Gambian legislators.

Two weeks later, on 29 July, Senegal and The Gambia signed a definitive border‑demarcation agreement. The pact calls for joint installation of physical markers and densification work to resume on 15 August and be completed by September, alongside an awareness campaign for farmers near the buffer zone. Oversight is provided by the Senegal‑Gambia Permanent Secretariat, building on the 2015 framework for border cooperation.

In early August the demarcation effort was re‑started as scheduled, with deputy executive secretary Cherno Omar Barry supervising the work. By 5 August the governments announced the finalisation of a historic delimitation accord that establishes a permanent physical line, expected to stabilise trade routes, simplify customs and policing, and improve economic integration for border communities.
