Following the official start of the Sangomar oil field in June 2024, Senegal experienced a significant transformation in its trade balance. In 2025, the first full year of commercialization, crude oil exports rose to 1,528 billion FCFA from 464 billion FCFA in 2024, making crude oil the country’s primary export at 21.9% of total exports.

By July 2026, this upward trend continued with monthly exports rising 27.3% to 668.2 billion FCFA. This growth was largely driven by a surge in crude oil shipments, which increased from 87.7 billion FCFA in June to 273.4 billion FCFA in July. While increases in refined petroleum products and phosphoric acid contributed to the growth, declines in liquefied natural gas, hydraulic cement, and fresh sea fish partially offset the gains.
