In Senegal, various stakeholders have launched initiatives to address the well-being of vulnerable populations, specifically focusing on mental health and incarcerated individuals.

Following World Mental Health Day, advocates in the Kolda region organized community activities to reduce taboos surrounding psychological well-being among youth. Concurrently, Ansoumana Dione, president of the Senegalese Association for the Monitoring and Assistance of Mentally Ill People (ASSAMM), called for increased government collaboration. Dione urged President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to implement a national care program, secure psychotropic medications, and establish specialized facilities for mentally ill detainees at the Thiaroye psychiatric hospital.

Further efforts to support detainees have been led by legal and professional associations. In Rufisque, the Sen Avocates association provided health screenings for cancer and sexually transmitted infections at the Maison d’arrêt et de correction (MAC), asserting that health is a fundamental human right. In Diourbel, the PROMO 99 association, composed of legal and political science alumni, provided free legal consultations to help detainees understand their judicial status and navigate legal procedures.
