In late July 2026, Senegalese authorities began a series of operations targeting migrant smuggling networks aiming to transport people by boat to the Spanish Canary Islands. On 19 July, police in Saint-Louis intercepted a group at Guet-Ndar following surveillance that began on 16 July. Eight suspects were remanded to the public prosecutor on charges of criminal association and attempted trafficking. The investigation also detained a motor holder and a driver who had moved three convoys from Foundiougne to Saint-Louis. Suspects indicated the vessel would stop in Gambia before heading for the Canaries, with outboard engines being supplied from Mauritania. A few days later, on 31 July and 1 August, the gendarmerie carried out coordinated raids in the Saloum Delta’s mangrove zones. The first raid in the Bossinkang forest of Toubacouta detained 36 people, while a second night-time sweep in Fandiongue uncovered a hidden 18-metre pirogue and led to the arrest of 137 migrants and three boat captains. In total, 173 irregular migrants—including 116 men, 15 women, and six children from Senegal, Mali, Gambia, and Guinea—were seized. Authorities confiscated the boat, two 40-horsepower outboard engines, and 238 fuel canisters. On 13 August, authorities in Karang received a tip-off that led to the dismantling of another network operating near the Gambian border. The National Division for the Fight against Migrant Trafficking (DNLT) intercepted three individuals accused of criminal association, fraud, and attempted trafficking. Through cross-border cooperation with Gambian immigration police, investigators located 180 migrants gathered in a forest near Farafenni. Police seized a large pirogue, a 40-horsepower engine, and supplies intended for a sea crossing to the Spanish coast. The three suspects reportedly confessed, aiding investigations into other potential network members. By late August, maritime interceptions increased.
