Anthony Kazmierczak has been sentenced to 14 months in federal prison for the assault of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar. The sentencing follows a guilty plea regarding an incident in January during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis, where Kazmierczak used a syringe to spray a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar at the congresswoman.

U.S. District Judge Joan Ericksen characterized the attack as “misguided, selfish, and inconsistent with any concept of a free or democratic society” and a “terrifying” act. Evidence indicated the attack was premeditated, as Kazmierczak had purchased tickets weeks in advance and researched Omar’s security and legal history.

In addition to the prison term, Kazmierczak was ordered to serve three years of supervised release, which includes a permanent no-contact order regarding Omar. He also faces a pending state case as prosecutors review the federal proceedings.
