The Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) has proposed an expansion of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park (PNSAC) to include the municipalities of Alcanena, Ourém, and Torres Novas. The proposal, which is undergoing public consultation, seeks to add approximately 3,734 hectares to the existing protected area to cover gaps in the Maciço Calcário Estremenho.

Detailed assessments show that the municipality of Torres Novas would host nearly 80% of this new territory, encompassing 2,937.1 hectares across the parishes of Pedrógão, Chancelaria, and Assentis. A central objective of the expansion is the protection of the Escarpa do Arrife, a geological structure marking the transition between the Estremenho Limestone Massif and the Tagus Tertiary Basin, which was largely excluded from the park when it was established in 1979.
