Developments: 6. Comedian Shane Gillis drew significant criticism following his hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live on October 10. During his monologue, Gillis made derogatory remarks regarding women’s gym attire, specifically stating, “I didn’t know women just dress like whores now.” Actor Dan Levy condemned the comments as misogynistic, stating that men who use such language are ‘misogynists’ and expressing that he was ‘speechless’ that these remarks were made on live national television. Levy further noted that the issue is an “everyday issue” rather than just a women’s issue. Former SNL cast members responded via social media; Ego Nwodim used a gym selfie with the caption ‘whore reporting for duty’ to address the comments, while Cecily Strong also responded to the monologue. Other public figures, including Jenna Bush Hager, singer-songwriter Derek Webb, and singer Maren Morris, voiced criticism. Actress Martha Plimpton criticized SNL creator Lorne Michaels, suggesting the program requires more women in decision-making roles. While Gillis issued an apology to the audience for an accidental expletive during a sketch, he has not publicly apologized for the remarks regarding women’s clothing. SNL cast member Michael Che has defended the segment, telling the Today Show, “It’s like, you think it’s funny and some people don’t.” On October 18, the controversy reached SNL UK, where comedian Ania Magliano delivered a verbal rebuke toward Gillis during the Weekend Update segment. On October 20, former SNL cast member Dana Carvey defended Gillis during an appearance on the ‘Fly on the Wall’ podcast. Carvey expressed confusion over the backlash, stating, “I just didn’t understand the kerfuffle, only because to me, I just saw it as what we call... a joke!” ## Timeline ### 2026-10-20: Dana Carvey defends Shane Gillis following SNL monologue backlash Dana Carvey defended Shane Gillis’ controversial Saturday Night Live monologue, arguing that the jokes about women’s gym attire should be viewed as comedy rather than literal statements. 8 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/dana-carvey-defends-shane-gillis-following-snl-monologue-backlash ### 2026-10-18: Shane Gillis faces backlash over controversial SNL monologue Shane Gillis faced backlash and a verbal rebuke from comedian Ania Magliano following controversial remarks about women's gymwear during his Saturday Night Live monologue. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/shane-gillis-faces-backlash-over-controversial-snl-monologue ### 2026-10-16: Michael Che responds to Shane Gillis' controversial SNL monologue Michael Che addressed the backlash surrounding Shane Gillis’ controversial monologue on Saturday Night Live, stating that the joke is a matter of comedic opinion. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/michael-che-responds-to-shane-gillis-controversial-snl-monologue ### 2026-10-14: Michael Che defends Shane Gillis’ controversial SNL joke Michael Che defended Shane Gillis’ controversial SNL monologue as “comedy” while discussing the difficulties of balancing his Saturday Night Live duties with his solo stand-up career. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/michael-che-defends-shane-gillis-controversial-snl-joke ### 2026-10-12: Shane Gillis sparks controversy with SNL monologue Shane Gillis faces intense backlash after using derogatory language to describe women's gym attire during his Saturday Night Live monologue, prompting responses from celebrities and fans alike. 42 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/ego-nwodim-and-dan-levy-criticize-shane-gillis-over-snl-monologue ### 2026-10-10: Shane Gillis faces backlash after controversial SNL monologue Shane Gillis faced backlash for misogynistic comments during his Saturday Night Live monologue, while musical guest Rosalía received praise for her theatrical performances of songs from her album ‘Lux’. 49 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/shane-gillis-to-host-saturday-night-live-with-musical-guest-rosala --- Cite as: Shane Gillis SNL monologue controversy.
