A new aesthetic trend known as ‘colourmaxxing’ is signaling a shift away from the long-standing dominance of neutral tones and ‘quiet luxury’ toward vibrant, maximalist palettes. This movement, which emphasizes bold combinations like fuchsia with neon green or coral with teal, is influencing both fashion and interior design. Industry experts suggest that Copenhagen Fashion Week served as a turning point for this resurgence of color. In interior design, professionals note that homeowners are increasingly seeking more personal, expressive spaces, moving away from the ‘beige’ minimalism that has prevailed for years. Designer Jonathan Adler is further advocating for a shift away from the minimalist, neutral-toned ‘Millennial gray’ aesthetic toward maximalist interiors. Adler suggests that homeowners embrace bold colors, striking patterns, and spaces that reflect personal individuality. He advises against using solid beige rugs, which he describes as boring, and instead suggests selecting patterned or graphic rugs to serve as a foundation for a room. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-01: Jonathan Adler promotes maximalist design over Millennial gray Designer Jonathan Adler encourages a move away from minimalist 'Millennial gray' toward maximalist decor, recommending bold patterns and graphic rugs as a foundation for personal style. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/jonathan-adler-promotes-maximalist-design-over-millennial-gray ### 2026-09-08: Colourmaxxing trend signals shift from neutral minimalism to vibrant maximalism The ‘colourmaxxing’ trend is replacing neutral minimalism with vibrant, maximalist colors in both fashion and interior design, drawing heavy inspiration from 1980s aesthetics. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/colourmaxxing-trend-signals-shift-from-neutral-minimalism-to-vibrant-maximalism --- Cite as: Shift toward maximalist design and color trends.
