Siale Taupaki, a defensive tackle for Penn State, is entering his eighth season of college football following a seven-season tenure at UCLA. His extended career is attributed to redshirt seasons, medical waivers, and a COVID-19 eligibility waiver.

Taupaki has utilized Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) income to provide financial support for his parents, who emigrated from Tonga to the United States. He has shared details regarding his family’s past hardships, including periods of being unhoused in Oakland, California.

While Taupaki’s longevity has been noted by coaches, upcoming changes to college athletics eligibility rules—which aim to limit players to five seasons of eligibility over five years—would likely prevent similar career timelines in the future.
