Infrastructure development in Sicily continues to face operational and financial setbacks. In Messina, the Tremestieri port project has encountered delays and funding shortages, with land-based works stalled at 50% and maritime works below 35%. The project has consumed over 100 million euros in public funds, leaving a funding gap of 11.5 million euros.

Regional challenges persist with the Messina-Catania railway doubling project facing bureaucratic hurdles and material transport restrictions, while the Port of Catania suffers from severe logistical congestion and long truck queues. 

In Palermo, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) has announced nightly train service suspensions to facilitate infrastructure and technological upgrades. From November 4, 2026, to February 28, 2027, service on the Palermo Centrale to Palermo Aeroporto line, and the section between Palermo Notarbartolo and Palermo Politeama, will be interrupted nightly from 21:30 to 05:00, excluding Sunday nights. These works are preparatory to activating a double track on the Palermo Notarbartolo to Palermo Palazzo Reale-Orleans section and opening the Lolli and Tribunale stations. Trenitalia will provide replacement bus services, though travelers are warned of potential increases in travel times due to road traffic.
