On 6 August 2026, Sicilian regional president Renato Schifani inaugurated the Costanza I, the first ferry owned by the Sicilian Region. Built by Fincantieri, the 140-metre dual-fuel vessel is designed to serve daily routes to the Pelagie islands, including Lampedusa, Linosa, and Pantelleria.

Following its launch, the approximately 143 million euro investment has faced political scrutiny. Opposition politicians have questioned the economic necessity of the project, arguing that the ship is oversized for the islands' infrastructure and that smaller vessels would have been more functional. 

In response to these concerns, regional officials have defended the investment. To manage logistics and avoid obstructing aircraft descent corridors at the local airport, the vessel is scheduled to dock at Cala Pisana until at least 30 September, while the Cavallo Bianco port remains an alternative during inclement weather.
