Mariateresa Fragomeni, the Mayor of Siderno, has addressed various regional challenges in Calabria, ranging from infrastructure safety to administrative efficiency.

Following several fatal accidents in early September, Fragomeni called for urgent road safety upgrades in the Locride region. She cited the deaths of four citizens on the SS 682 ‘Jonio-Tirreno’ and the SS 106 Ionica as evidence that local arteries fail to meet European safety standards. Specific concerns were raised regarding the renovation of the SS 106 and the lack of funding for a second tunnel for the Limina gallery on the SS 682.

Later in the month, Fragomeni discussed the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). She noted that while Calabria has realized only 15.6% of its PNRR projects compared to a national average of 72.3%, Siderno has successfully implemented 100% of its allocated projects. She advocated for supporting municipalities with high spending capacity and expressed opposition to differentiated autonomy, arguing it could increase regional disparities.

By late September, Italy reached a major milestone by completing the 156 objectives required to trigger the tenth and final installment of the PNRR, totaling €28.4 billion. Minister for European Affairs Tommaso Foti described the completion of all 576 objectives within the Plan as a “significant result for the country and a victory for the Meloni government.”

With total net spending exceeding €133 billion, investments have targeted healthcare, infrastructure, digitalization, and social inclusion. Angelo Contessa, president of ANCE Brindisi, noted that small and medium-sized enterprises in Southern Italy have improved their organizational capacity through the Plan, but he emphasized the need for stable, multi-year public works programming to maintain momentum.
