Following heavy rainfall on August 3 that caused significant destruction in Freetown and the Western Area Urban District of Sierra Leone, the European Union announced a €175,000 emergency aid package.

The funding, described as an “expression of European solidarity,” will be distributed through the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The assistance is intended to support 5,100 people across 27 communities, providing multipurpose cash transfers, emergency shelter, health support, and water and sanitation services to prevent disease outbreaks.

Local reports indicate the floods resulted in at least four deaths, the destruction or damage of over 700 homes, and the contamination of 18 community boreholes.
