DayOne Data Centers, Cortical Labs, and the National University of Singapore (NUS) Medicine have launched Singapore’s first biological data center prototype. This initiative utilizes “wetware,” which employs living neurons grown from stem cells connected to silicon hardware to process information.

The prototype features a 20-unit CL1 biological computing system, described as the world’s first independently operated biologically integrated server rack. The system houses approximately 16 million human neurons that interface with digital hardware via microelectrode arrays, allowing for real-time electrical signal exchange between the biological cells and silicon circuits.

The technology aims to provide an energy-efficient complement to traditional silicon-based infrastructure, particularly for sparse data environments like robotics navigation and cybersecurity anomaly detection. While a typical high-density AI server rack can exceed 100 kilowatts, a fully equipped CL1 rack consumes between 800 and 1,000 watts.

However, the overall efficiency remains unproven as no computational benchmarks have been released. Maintaining the biological components requires energy for life-support systems, including pumps, gas mixing, temperature control, and filtration. Cortical Labs states that the neurons can be maintained for up to six months.
