In 2025 Singapore recorded 29,864 live births, an 11.4% drop from the previous year and the lowest total since independence in 1965. The total fertility rate fell to a historic low of 0.87. First‑time mothers were older and more educated, with an average age of 32.1 years and 67.7% holding university degrees. High housing costs, an aging population and a modest rise in deaths to 26,499 heightened concerns about future labour supply.

A separate analysis highlighted a widening morbidity gap: while life expectancy remains high, years lived in good health have fallen, widening by about 2.35 years since 1990. In response, the government formed a task force on marriage and parenting and emphasized immigration management to offset a shrinking workforce. The task force is slated to release its findings in early 2027, with possible interim recommendations beforehand.
