Slovak opposition leaders are increasingly calling for greater cooperation to challenge the current government. Igor Matovič, leader of Hnutie Slovensko, has urged various opposition parties to unite against what he describes as a ‘governing mafia’ and has organized joint demonstrations scheduled for November 17 across several regional cities.

In the Prešov region, members of Progressive Slovakia (PS) have also advocated for party cooperation to prevent vote fragmentation during upcoming municipal elections, citing successful multi-party agreements in other cities as models.

Tensions have also manifested in physical confrontations, such as an incident in Bytča where a 78-year-old man was detained by police following an altercation with Igor Matovič and security personnel during a Hnutie Slovensko meeting. The man’s family claims the senior citizen was provoked during the interaction.

On October 17, 2026, representatives from five opposition parties—SaS, Progressive Slovakia, KDH, Hnutie Slovensko, and Demokrati—held a joint protest at SNP Square in Bratislava. This event marked the first time all five parties appeared together at a single gathering. Protesters utilized slogans such as ‘Enough of Fico’ and ‘Russians home’ to voice dissatisfaction with the government led by Robert Fico.

During the rally, Trenčín Mayor Richard Rybníček called on opposition leaders to establish a shadow government to provide a ‘stable and prepared democratic alternative.’ He emphasized the necessity of a unified plan to address the nation’s economic situation, unsustainable debt, and the restoration of trust in public institutions.
