Slovak Minister of Environment Tomáš Taraba has officially canceled a 120 million euro project to construct a large-scale waste incineration plant in Hontianske Tesáre, near the spa town of Dudince. The facility, proposed by the Košice-based company Granya, was designed to process 130,000 tons of waste annually.

Minister Taraba cited logistical and regional concerns, stating that such industrial facilities “do not belong in spa regions.” He noted that the Krupina district produces only two percent of the capacity the plant was intended to handle. While acknowledging that Slovakia requires modern waste-to-energy infrastructure to meet European standards by 2035 and reduce landfill reliance, the Minister suggested that future projects should be situated in existing industrial zones or former chemical plant sites to ensure logical viability.
